European Union unemployment at lowest level for 20 years
Unemployment in the EU is forecast to fall below 7% in 2008, according to Vladimír Spidla, the European Commission's Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities. This will bring the number of jobless down to its lowest levels since the mid-1980s. However, although more women and older people are now in work, youth unemployment remains a problem, averaging 17.4%. The EU is looking to reduce this by increased investment in education and training.
